The Year 2021: A Journey Of Sustainable Living
New year, new hopes, new resolutions and by bringing small changes in your lifestyle can make a big difference. Making an effort to become more sustainable and environmentally friendly is enough.
The year 2020 teaches us that every relationship needs space, especially the relationship between human and nature. When the whole of humanity was facing lockdown due to Covid-19, nature was flourishing and resting. This shows that less human activities can bring good changes to the environment.
Bring the change as a Challenge
There are various ways that an individual can make sustainable changes to decrease the negative impact that our daily lives usually contribute to. Sustainable living is the choice each has to make in the year 2021 to bring real change.
- Bring your own shopping bags: This is the most common advice we are getting from our childhood, but no one actually follows it. No one wants to carry an extra thing with them while going out. Yes, its a little hard to adjust but look at the pile of plastic bags in your house and then realize that its almost impossible to get rid of them in a thousand years. Change is the matter of habit, take this change as a challenge in this new year for 1 month and it will eventually turn into your habit.
- Say No to Fast Fashion: Countless and cheap new collections per year encourage us to buy more and more clothes which make the fashion industry second most polluting industry in the world. Chemicals used in the textile industry is harmful to not only the environment but our health too. 1 Kg of chemicals is needed to produce 1 Kg of textile in which 11 of them is highly toxic. So, instead of following fashion race blindly choose the other way. For example, instead of buying new clothes go for second-hand clothes once in a while. Choose brands with eco-friendly principles. Also choose fibres with low water consumption such as linen, recycled fibres, etc.
- Avoid eating with plastic: Nowadays it is in trend to bring your own metal straw and spoon while going out. It helps in getting rid of non-recyclable plastic waste from the planet. Also nowadays plastic waste generation is a huge issue because of the food delivery. Not surprisingly, researchers found that delivered meals used more plastic than meals eaten in restaurants. The average delivered meal used an average of 2.8 single-use plastic items or an estimated 54 grams of plastic. Not only it is harmful to the environment but our health too. So, it is better to cook your own healthy meal at home or bring your own packed tiffin to the office or college.
- Avoid buying item packed in plastic, like milk, chips, biscuits, chocolates, makeup, toothbrushes, etc. these one time used plastic will remain in the environment for a very long time. Instead of this buy milk from your near buy dairy in a steel container or bake your own biscuits at home. You can also try making your makeup, toothpaste and shampoos at home. It will be toxic-free and plastic-free.
- Opt for Farmers’ Market: Once in a while go to the farmers market to buy organic fruits and vegetables. It will help encourage the farmers to go for organic farming.
- Gift of Green: Unlike other materialistic gifts, plants live a happy and long life. Plants make people around them happier and can influence their mood. So, make a change in your gifting style and go for plants as a gift to your loved ones and take a step towards sustainable living.
